Lets’ talk about Brown Fat. What is it and why is it important?
The word “Fat” has a bad rep, it always has. However, there’s a big difference between Brown Fat and White Fat. White Fat is the type of Fat that we can all relate to and physically see. It’s occasionally stubborn and sticks to places on our body where we did not ask for it to go. White Fat is still important, in moderation, as it stores energy in our body. Brown Fat on the other hand, is opposite. It increases our energy expenditure and uses that energy stored in our body, which in turn decreases our white fat. It’s an organ that not many of us know about or talk about. We’re born with it, and we’re born with a lot of it. As a baby, we don’t have the ability to shiver. Shivering as we grow up, is how our body tries to warm our core by contracting muscles. How does a baby stay warm without shivering you might ask? That would be from all the Brown Fat! Brown fat is our bodies natural core regulator. As we get older, if we are not exposing ourselves to Cold temperatures, the Brown Fat in our bodies loses purpose and begins to rapidly decrease.
Fun Fact:
Women naturally have more brown fat than men. Yes, your sex plays a role, and you experience cold differently.
To put it simply, animals such as Bears or Squirrels who hibernate throughout the Winter are loaded with Brown Fat. The Brown Fat keeps their core warm enough to last through the cold and snowy winter months. Us humans, are no different. Although, we likely wouldn’t survive for other reasons if left outside for months in the cold.
In a recent study done by Dr. Susanna Søberg, she explored the benefits of Brown Fat, contributing to a deeper understanding of our metabolism and its intersection with our central nervous system. Dr. Susanna Søberg is an internationally leading expert on cold and heat as a stress management tool for physical and mental health. If you want to learn more about it, click on the video:
